Known for his work on Titanfall, Titanfall 2 and Apex Legends, executive producer Drew McCoy and lead designer Jon Shiring have left Respawn Entertainment to form their own studio called Gravity Well. After working for 10 years and helping build Respawn from scratch, the two decided to leave the highly successful studio to focus on their own methods of creating AAA titles.
In an article on his website, McCoy writes that they see this as an opportunity to change the way the industry produces video games. Namely, focus on AAA credentials without the time, low pay and mental health issues plaguing the industry.Ex-Respawn Devs Form New Gaming Studio Called Gravity Well With Focus On Next-Gen Games
They plan to do so by prioritizing “team health” and continuing with a reason for employee advancement. The size of their team will also contribute to the success of the studio in the future.
The new studio plans to stick to around 80 to 85 people. Shiring writes: “Once your team size exceeds 100 people, everything changes.”
By keeping a small studio, Gravity Well also hopes to maintain a higher level of creative risk to create more dynamic and inspired games, saying they are unhappy with the type of low-risk projects that are getting funding these days.
